Dallas Municipal Court

There are many issues to be concerned with when you have a warrant out for your arrest in the City of Dallas. Dallas Municipal Court has been under great scrutiny to come up with more and more money to satisfy the city council members. Because of this many harsh tactics are being used to generate extra money for the city. For example, our law firm just had a client come in today that had six warrants out for their arrest for various traffic ticket related offenses. Dallas had issued 1 warrant as “active.” The other warrants were simply in the warrant queue without any active arrest warrant being issued. When the client was released, he went to Dallas Municipal Court to request time served.

The prosecutor for the City of Dallas had him plead “no contest” and waive his right to an attorney before considering the request. Once the client waived his right to an attorney and entered his plea, they then denied his request for time served because the warrants were not active on any of the cases other than the cheapest ticket. At this point there is nothing that any ticket attorney in Dallas can do. That person will now have to pay almost $1500.00 in fines or risk going to jail multiple times for the same tickets over and over again while the city refuses to put the warrants into active status. Further, the tickets will now be reported to The Department of Public Safety as convictions against their driving record suspending their driving privileges. Here is what you want to do if you are arrested on a traffic ticket in Dallas to avoid this mess:

Get your traffic ticket warrants lifted by a Dallas ticket lawyer– immediately. a ticket lawyer in Dallas can lift the warrants, plead you “not guilty” to protect your record and make any time served requests that you need while still protecting your record.

Once you are released from jail, discuss your goals and expectations with your ticket attorney in Dallas. Do not think that the attorney is a mind reader. Many times, the attorney will not have an opportunity to meet you until you are released. Remember that the speeding tickets or traffic tickets you were arrested on are yours, not the attorneys’. The attorney will only care about your cases as much as you do. If you get released and do not contact your lawyer immediately after your release it is foolish. Simply using the excuse, “well they didn’t call me” doesn’t fly. That attorney not calling you is not going to keep you out of jail in the future. Always keep a good line of communication going between yourself and your lawyer.

Make sure the attorney receives a court date for you at least 10 days after your release and gives you notice of such. You paid your lawyer not only to release you, but also to make sure you go to court to dispose of your cases. If you get out of jail without requesting a court date, the cases will go back into warrant landing you right back in jail. This court date request should never take more than 10 days after your release. Longer than that and you should be worried.
Attend court once the scheduled hearing is set in Dallas Municipal Court. This is your opportunity to get your cases dismissed. If you show up and the Dallas police officer doesn’t it gives your ticket attorney the best opportunity to get your tickets dismissed. Miss the court date and you lose that opportunity. Put it on your phone, on your refrigerator, anywhere it takes to remember to show up. One appearance can easily save you thousands of dollars, so be responsible enough to make it to court on time.
